Waiheke Island

The Hauraki gulf, east off Auckland, is dotted with beautiful islands. Rangitoto is the famous one. It is the largest and youngest of Auckland's volvanic cones and typically shaped like one.
Another famous island is Waiheke. Only 40 minutes ferry trip away from Auckland but with the slow pace of life of a tropical island. Many picturesque bays and beaches plus lots of wineries as much of the island western half hills are cloaked with vineyards.
On a warm autumns sunday we took the ferry and rented a car to do some exploring. With us went Paul and Jenneke, just as us, freshly immigrated toNew Zealand. Waiheke proved to be very lovely and we had a great day enjoying its beauty.

Our mini 4 wheel drive took us around the island. Because the weather was so beautiful, Paul wanted to drive without the top. The girls sat wind swept, beautiful and freezing in the back.

Waiheke is green and hilly with great views

After all the driving, walking and admiring, we went of for a tasty meal in one of the wineries.
